Multivitamin

As we enter into the Autumn and Winter months, questions start to arise such as; when shall I turn on the heating? Should I wear a coat to work, maybe even gloves? Should I be taking a multivitamin?

Around this time every year, we start to be a bit more conscious about our health. Even now, colds and flus are flying around so taking a proactive approach to health seems to be the way forward and well worth the investment. This is why we want to dive into the topic of why you should think about taking a multivitamin and why it’s good to take one everyday.

Why should you take a Multivitamin?

Multivitamins say it in the name. They contain multiple vitamins and minerals and usually provide 100%, or more, of your RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance).

We always mention how important diet is, not just for your gut health, but for so many reasons. Diet is key for making sure we get enough nutrients so we don’t become deficient, which in turn, can lead to health related problems and illnesses. A diverse and nutrient-rich diet is one we should aim for, so getting in a range of good proteins, wholegrains, healthy fats and of course, fruits and vegetables each day is key. However, with hectic lifestyles or particular dietary requirements, it can be challenging to get all the nutrients we need solely from our diet. Therefore supplementing with a multivitamin is particularly important and should be taken everyday to make sure you aren’t missing out on those key vitamins and minerals. It’s important to acknowledge though, that taking a multivitamin can’t replace a healthy diet. Multivitamins are supplements which are to supplement a healthy lifestyle and used to fill in the gaps from what you may not be getting.

Nutrient deficiencies are very common and are not just down to our diets, but they can boil down to many reasons;

Vegans or vegetarians
  • Vitamin B12*, among some other vitamins, are often only found in animal products
Old age
  • As we get older our bodies find it harder to absorb vitamin B12*
Pregnancy
  • Getting enough folate* is very important for pregnant woman
Certain conditions

The examples below can suffer with poor absorption of nutrients;

  • Celiacs
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • IBS
  • Crohn’s
Digestive surgeries (e.g. gastric bypass)
  • By removing parts of digestive organs can lead to poor absorption of nutrients
Alcohol
  • Can also prevent nutrients being absorbed

What type of Multivitamin should I take?

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the amount of options out there. Do you go for pill-form, effervescent tablets, powders, chewable gummies, or even multivitamin drinks? It’s hard to know what the most effective is and what actually works.

Here at Aguulp, using our patented liquid liposomal technology, we created the ultimate multivitamin; Aguulp for Immunity. By using liposomal technology, it means all the vitamins and minerals in each sachet are absorbed within 4 minutes and they provide an absorption rate of up to 98%. Pills, on the other hand, take around 30 minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and with that, only 20% of these vitamins and minerals are actually absorbed.

Aguulp for Immunity stemmed from our knowledge that 70% of your immune system lives within your Gut, which highlights the importance of not only looking after your gut, but also your immune system, since the pair are so linked. We actually created a Dual-Pack for that too which you can check out here. So, we now know that it works, but…

What’s actually in it so I know why I should be taking it?

Vitamin A (Retinol)

Vitamin A can help the body fight illnesses and infections. Effectively helping the immune system to function properly. It is also known for promoting eye health and good vision. It has also been shown to help treat certain skin conditions, such as acne and wrinkles.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hcl)

Vitamin B6 helps the body to store and use energy from proteins and carbs found in food. It is particularly key for helping the brain and nervous system function properly. It helps the body produce serotonin (known as the happy hormone) which helps regulate mood. It also helps produce melatonin (the hormone known to promote regular sleep patterns). Studies have shown that the combination of Vitamin B6, B9 and B12 can help with ageing brains and may help reduce memory loss and cognitive decline.

Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid)

Vitamin B9 helps with the production of red blood cells. The combination of Iron and vitamin B9 helps produce and maintain the health of these red blood cells and by lacking the two, can lead to a deficiency known as anemia (lack of red blood cells). It also reduces the risk of birth defects in unborn babies by helping with the production of DNA and RNA.

Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin)

Vitamin B12 also helps with the formation of healthy red blood cells, as well as keeping nerve cells healthy. It, too, helps prevent anemia and therefore reduction in fatigue. There are also studies to show that vitamin B12 promotes healthy hair growth by fuelling red blood cells to hair follicles.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid, from acerola cherry)

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps strengthen your immune system by protecting cells. It also plays a key role in keeping bones and blood vessels healthy and also skin, by helping with the formation of collagen. By encouraging the production of white blood cells, vitamin C can also help protect the body from infection, protect them from harmful free radicals and strengthen the skin’s barriers. This makes it known for its wound healing properties.

Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

Vitamin D is produced in your skin from the sun. It’s main purpose is regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body and is therefore key to keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy. It also helps keep the immune system functioning. Research has also shown vitamin D helping to regulate mood. During the winter months supplementing with vitamin D is key due to the lack of sun exposure.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps promote skin and eye health, whilst also helping strengthen the immune system to protect against illnesses and infections.

Omega 3 (from Fish Oil)

Omega 3’s, also known as essential fatty acids, say it in the name. They are essential for overall health and to keep the immune system functioning. Aguulp for Immunity contains the two most crucial ones; DHA and EPA. Omega 3 is known to help the brain function and support overall brain health. Studies have even shown that it can help reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety and can reduce the risk of alzheimers and dementia. It is also known for its inflammatory properties and has been shown to help with joint pain, stiffness and help people who suffer with arthritis. It is also known to promote skin health, reduce blood pressure, improve circulation and also supports a healthy heart.
