There’s a lot of discussion out there about bone broth and the benefits of bone broth for gut health, but are you aware of what exactly it is and how to incorporate it into your diet?

Our good friends over at Ossa Organic have written this lowdown on all things bone broth for us. Ossa makes an amazing range of gut-friendly products and they’ve taken the time to highlight exactly why consuming bone broth for gut health can be so beneficial.

Read on to discover Ossa’s top 5 reasons why you should be making bone broth part of your everyday diet. They’ve also included a delicious bone broth recipe that you can make at home…

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is made by simmering bones – from chicken, beef, or even lamb or pork. You might like to add some seasonings to the pan when boiling up bone broth for extra flavouring. When you boil up bones and are left with a clear liquid that’s full of meat juices – that’s bone broth.

Some people like to drink bone broth by itself to reap its claimed benefits, but it can also be used a little like stock as base for soups and stews.

5 amazing bone broth benefits

So, what is bone broth good for? From helping with joint pain to supporting your immune system and even promoting healthy skin, below are five fantastic bone broth benefits you need to know about.

1. Helps with joint pain

Slow cooking bones produces gelatine and collagen, which are full of amino acids such as proline and glycine. These naturally occurring compounds are used by our bodies to build tissue and can help to strengthen and support joint health – just one of the potential bone broth benefits.

According to research by the Department of Nutrition and Sports Nutrition for Athletics at Penn State University, when athletes added collagen to their diets over the course of 6 months, the majority showed a significant improvement in joint comfort and a decrease in the
negative impacts of athletic performance, such as muscle and joint pain. If you’re a very active person, you might like to consider consuming more bone broth.

2. Helps with a leaky gut

Studies have also shown that gelatine is beneficial for restoring the strength of the gut lining and fighting food allergies, such as sensitivity to grain, wheat, and diary. It also helps encourage the growth of good gut bacteria, which in turn helps to maintain healthy inflammation levels in the digestive tract. Gelatine effectively supports intestinal health and integrity, according to a report published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.

3. Promotes healthy skin, hair and nails

Another of the great bone broth benefits is that it can help to promote healthy skin, hair, and nails. The collagen, glycine and minerals like calcium and magnesium found in bone broth are not only great for your gut health, but can also help to make skin more supple, and have even been boasted to reverse signs of ageing like wrinkles.

Collagen is one of the nutritional powerhouses found in bone broth that is a structural protein and one of the reasons gut health specialists like Dr Kelly Ann swear by the elixir. Dr Kelly Ann says that not only can it help with elasticity of the skin, but it also keeps you fuller for longer. This can help to stop you from snacking on junk and fast food that also contribute to ageing and poor skin. Read more about the benefits of collagen for gut health. Our Aguulp for Gut formula also contains beneficial amounts of collagen.

4. Supports a strong immune system

Next on our list of bone broth benefits is immune system support. As it’s filled with collagen/gelatine and the amino acids proline, glutamine, and arginine, bone broth can help to seal the gut lining and support gut integrity. Rather than attacking healthy cells that are compromised by a leaky gut, bone broth helps to maintain healthy inflammation levels and normal immune system function.

5. A great source of energy

The glycine and magnesium in bone broth can help promote well rested sleep, which in turn
leaves you more rejuvenated and refreshed in the morning. What’s more, with a sealed and
healthy gut, you can absorb more nutrients from your food, helping to boost energy during the day, and supporting a healthy mood.

Experience bone broth benefits by making sure you’re consuming the very best. The best bone broths come from the best ingredients, which is why it’s important to make sure your bone broth is slow-cooked for the longest time possible, with only premium ingredients, organic and locally sourced where possible.

Ossa’s range of bone broths are all slow cooked for up to 24 hours using premium organic
vegetables, alongside grass-fed and free range bones from British farms… it’s a #gutfeeling.
